A primary source, generally speaking, is one that was created at or near the time of an event, often by an eye-witness or someone with direct involvement. The sources are often documents, but they could also include photographs, paintings, recordings or any number of other artifacts.
Once you choose a Primary Source, you have essentially chosen your broad topic for this paper. Your paper should also include 2 or more Secondary Sources. A secondary source is one that was written/created significantly after the event it relates to, and it was most likely created byby someone who was not a part of the event.
Content/Organization Requirements:
When finished, your History Research Paper should be approximately 4-6 pages long. The content of your paper should be your telling of a “story” as supported by the facts that you find in your primary and secondary sources.
The unique part of your paper will be in how you tell the story, how you make connections between the sources, and how you draw conclusions from the facts. For additional information, refer to the “Writing in History” section of your CCA Writing Toolkit, pg. 8-12.
This paper will be written using Chicago (CMS) style. Information on CMS style can be found starting on pg. 444 of the Writing Toolkit, and additional resources are available on the Content tab in D2L.
