ESSAY #2 – PART 1

Essay #2 will be a chance to express an opinion in writing without formal research. It’s another step in our journey to a well-researched and expressed argument. First, we looked at a published, written argument and now we will write an editorial – a brief argument without formal research.

Part I of the editorial requires that you sit down, choose a local topic* for the editorial, and express your opinion on this topic in 300-500 words. You are NOT to put in any outside research. All I want for part one is your opinion in a rough, quick draft.

You should have some sort of claim: Textbooks are too expensive.

And some reasons or things you want: Textbooks prices should be lowered. Students should be able to rent books. (What else?)

Don’t have too many reasons – maybe the best/strongest 2 or 3 since you only have 300-500 words to express them with.

*A local topic is one that is relevant to the WIU campus population. Some examples include textbook prices, food in the residence halls, parking, the bus system, size of the campus, the Rec Center, etc.
