Linguistics

Three choices:

OPTION 1—Code-switching

1.    Watch this video on Spanglish (the mixture of Spanish and English mid-sentence, sometimes even mid-word):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYMnNlfSMC0
WANT TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER WORK ON THIS PAPER? CLICK HERE TO ORDER THIS PAPER
2.    Also watch this video about the little boy who speaks French, Indonesian, and English:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgWQoZz6nEk

3.    (Optional: watch this other video about Spanglish. Even though the visual quality is poor, it does have a very well-respected linguist in it, who has some ideas to offer):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nq5ruHYvgg

4.    Read pp. 170-172 in Language Matters, and also pp. 207 to the top of 211.

5.    Write a 3- to 4-page (double-spaced) essay in which you explain why people code-switch (between any pair or set of languages that they know well) and what linguists would say about the phenomenon (hint: there are linguists in the Spanglish video, in addition to in your book). Give examples from one or more of the videos, so we can see what code-switching sounds like and how it could be structured.

During your essay, consider these questions (and answer one or more of them in your essay:

•    What do the linguists and the expert users in the Spanglish video say that helps you understand how the little boy learned to keep those 3 languages separate?
•    Why are some older generations so against it? Why does code-switching occur a little more among younger people? (Think about what we know about language from other parts of this course.)
•    What patterns are there in code-switching (see the textbook or use your own experience and observations)? When is a switch likely to happen? What about when it happens in the middle of a sentence?

(Please don’t count it as code-switching when monolingual speakers use a word in another language, especially with other monolingual people around, in order to be funny, as in “Hey, can we get a couple more cervezas over here?” Code-switching refers to an ability that bilingual/multilingual people have.)

OPTION 2—Language and thought

Chapter 22, “Is Language a Strait-Jacket?” suggests that there are two main approaches to the relationship between language and thought:

1.    linguistic relativity (or its stronger form, called linguistic determinism), which suggests that language influences the way we think (both of these are part of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis). In other words, the fact that we all speak different languages means that we perceive and divide up the world according to the language we speak. To say, “You can’t understand my language completely, because you don’t understand the cultural background,” is an example of linguistic relativity.

2.    linguistic universality (the textbook authors don’t use this term language directly), which suggests that humans all share certain ways of perceiving the world and that they will have those thoughts/perceptions no matter how their different languages work. In other words, languages may be very different, but people are still capable of thinking ideas that are not encoded in their native languages.

Using specific research or ideas from at least 4 chapters and any relevant class discussions to support your points, which approach do you take? (If you’re “on the fence” between the two approaches, tell us what kinds of evidence make you think each side has some merits.)

There is no right answer to the question of which side or sides that you choose. Which one feels more persuasive to you? Use a variety of specific ideas that you learned in this course to support that side. Write a 3- to 4-page exploratory essay.

OPTION 3—What is linguistics?

This is a more complex question than it seems (in fact, there are about 12 more linguistics courses you could take at BSU, and each one would cover a different topic!).

Imagine telling your parents or a friend or someone who isn’t a linguist about what linguistics is and why it’s worth studying. Write that fictional conversation in about 4-5 pages. Remember the format, using colons and spaces after each speaker. For example:

Me:  I’m taking linguistics this semester.

Cory:  That sounds like it could be cool. I wish I spoke a lot of languages. So how many languages do you speak now?

Me:  Oh, I didn’t take linguistics in order to learn a bunch of languages.

Cory: Really, I thought that’s what a linguist was.

Me: Actually, linguistics….

According to the syllabus, this course is about “the complex nature of language, its capacity for change, its natural diversity, and its fundamental role in our participation in social life.” But what does each of these things mean? What does it mean to say that language is complex or that it’s fundamental in society?

Requirements:

•    You must quote exact words from the book 3 or 4 times, citing page numbers. Use quotes that are relevant and that support your point. Quote from at least 2 chapters (Language Matters or The 5-Minute Linguist).
•    Also paraphrase the textbook, using your own words but taking the ideas from at least 4 of the chapters, citing page numbers but not using quotation marks. For example:
o    Bauer, Holmes, and Warren say that grammar is like instructions for a toy or furniture assembly kit (104). This analogy is useful, I think, for….
•    Use very specific examples—from class discussion, the textbook, your or other people’s wiki posts or your own observations, or some combination. Quote words and phrases and even isolated sounds.
•    Pay attention to your classmates’ comments. If you like an idea and want to include it, you need to cite your classmate. You can just say, “My classmate __[name]__ points out that ________________.” Try to find out their last name so you can cite them.
•    Your essay needs to be typed and needs to use standard formatting.
o    capital letters at the beginnings of proper nouns
o    5 or more paragraphs, all with several lines of text and a half-inch indentation at the beginning of each paragraph
o    one-inch margins
o    double-spaced lines
o    Remember: don’t hit “Enter” at the end of a line, only at the end of a paragraph.
WANT TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER WORK ON THIS PAPER? CLICK HERE TO ORDER THIS PAPER
o    If you’re doing Option 3, then write single-spaced paragraphs for one person’s “turn” in the conversation. Then separate that person’s utterance from the next speaker’s utterance with a double space.

Art galleries have begun to conceptualize their visitors as tourists who have specific
needs and motivations and are increasingly staging special events as part of their
programs. One strategy to attract visitors is to use short-term visual art exhibits as
special events. An example is the 2012 festival of death exhibit at the Southbank
Centre in London which celebrated death by displaying unusual coffin designs from
both the UK and Ghana. In addition, a death related festival provided music
inspired by death, a play about euthanasia, talks and debates on the best ways to
die, the most eco- friendly burials and the art of obituary writing.

Instruction
c) Case Study. The purpose of case study is to develop the analytical and reasoning skill. Although idea sharing or brainstorm meetings are allowed among students at the initial stage of case study, every student is required to conduct his own case study independently. The topic of case study will be assigned in the class (Please start to read cases starting in P529 in the textbook). The steps of how to conduct a case study is more important than the content of the case study because you are expected to develop the analytic and reasoning skills.
i. The format of how to write a case analysis study is as follows:
1. Identification of Pertinent Fact,
2. Formulation of Key Issues,
3. List of Underlying Theory,
4. Analysis of the Facts with the theory on the Topic of Issue(s),
5. Reach of Conclusions,
6. Possible Strategic Implications.
ii. Please follow the above given format in conducting your case analysis. Always make sure that you are able to differentiate facts from opinions; problems from symptoms, understand the  concepts, theories, and framework behind the facts and problems, render your thorough analysis, reach a sound conclusion, and see if you are able to formulate appropriate and alternative marketing solutions or strategies for a similar situation.
iii. Please limit your case analysis within two pages and use single spaced lines with double spaced  between the meaningful paragraphs. Write down your name and ID number on the case study before turning it in for evaluation.

talk about a community organization

Directions:

For this assignment, choose one local community organization that is dedicated to some social, cultural or artistic purpose that addresses at least one of the social inequalities explained in our course materials.
WANT TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER WORK ON THIS PAPER? CLICK HERE TO ORDER THIS PAPER
Some basic organization types to think about might include ones that were founded to address:

art/environment exposure to various populations
battered families
educational attainment
ethnic empowerment
foster care
gender empowerment
homelessness
immigrant & refugee transition
LGBT support
medical/surgery assistance
small business backing
workers rights

Please do not choose an organization that you are already involved in, as your previous engagement with the organization may constrict the capacity to learn and to critically asses the organization.
_______________________________________________________

Through the organization’s own material, what others may have written about it, and if possible, your own interviews with members of the organization, prepare a report which describes:

The report should discuss but not be limited to the following:

Intro:
the name of the organization,
description of the organization: its sources of funding, its organizational structure, whether it is a profit or nonprofit group, its history

Thesis (KEY!):
the explanation of SOC 350-related social issue(s) that the organization addresses
"Angles" (aka body paragraphs)
the types of activities it supports,
who the organization serves and whether the population that is recipient to the services are involved in leadership and decision making of the organization
how the organization works to contest and/or ameliorate the consequences of inequality.
WANT TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER WORK ON THIS PAPER? CLICK HERE TO ORDER THIS PAPER

Conclusion:
stated purpose of the organization and your assessment of how well the organization meets the purpose

The most important part of the assignment is its analytic focus, i.e., discuss how the purpose, function, or other aspects of this organization reflect the major themes or ideas about cultural diversity and inequality that we are studying in this class.
Be specific.

_______________________________________________________

The Community Report is intended to be an integrative essay; you should demonstrate that you are able to discuss the various concepts covered in SOC 350 in an informed academic fashion. Students are are expected to connect a wide range of various SOC 350 sources across different themes and units (particularly the readings from Unit 4), with your own outside research.

Use of sources: Please use a wide range of research from SOC 350 and outside = there should be at least 2-3 different SOC 350-related sources per angle.
This means a cohesive mix of text, web source, and the outside sources you examine, such as the organization's web site, its partner links, media articles, press releases, and other scholarly journal or book articles on your organization's focus.

Critical Analysis: Do not merely copy+paste quotes from materials into your Report.
Instead, synthesize and interpret the information in your own words, using properly cited resources that you build upon with your analysis. Be sure to cite the source of all information that is not common knowledge.
Again, do not import materials directly from the organizations materials (copy+paste), but rather, apply SOC 350 course ideas and information, describe and analyze, and explain your findings in your original writing.

When writing this essay you should assume the role of an HR consultant. Your task is

relevant academic literature, when critically analysing the HR implications of the
environmental changes chosen for analysis, and to inform the suggestions to the

PLAGIARISM AND OTHER FORMS OF CHEATING:
All assignments will be checked for plagiarism (via Turnitin) and disciplinary procedures
will be initiated if any student’s work is found to include plagiarism (i.e., penalties will be
imposed relative to the degree of infringement).
Plagiarism is the copying of another person's ideas or expressions without appropriate
acknowledgment and presenting these ideas or forms of expression as your own. It includes
not only written works such as books or journals but data or images that may be presented in
tables, diagrams, designs, plans, photographs, film, music, formulae, web sites and computer
programs. Plagiarism also includes the use of (or passing off) the work of lecturers or other
students as your own.
WANT TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER WORK ON THIS PAPER? CLICK HERE TO ORDER THIS PAPER
Plagiarism is a form of cheating that the University regards as an extremely serious
academic offence. The penalties associated with plagiarism are severe and extend from
cancelling all marks for the specific assessment item or for the entire unit through to
exclusion from your course. These penalties are detailed in Part 2 of Regulation 4.1 (1)
Student Discipline.
It is important to realise, however, that it is certainly not cheating to use the work of others in
your work. On the contrary ‐a well‐constructed essay or report should normally refer to and
build on the work of others for positioning, supporting and strengthening your work and
advancing knowledge. Plagiarism occurs when due recognition and acknowledgement of the
work of others is not provided. Therefore, whenever you are using another person's research
or ideas (whether by direct quotation or by paraphrasing) you must always appropriately cite
the source. If you are ever in doubt about the most appropriate form of referencing, you
should consult your lecturer or Division of Student Life.
Talking about your assignment with other students is acceptable and encouraged. However,
jointly writing up the assignment, or using the same written words from your discussion, is a
form of cheating because we are not able to identify whose idea the information is.
Unauthorised collaboration involves working with others with the intention of deceiving
examiners about who actually completed the work. If there has been any collaboration in
preparing individual assessment items, this must be disclosed (clearly stated that it is a joint
effort). In the case of group project work, lecturers provide guidelines on what level of
collaboration is appropriate and how the work of each participant in the project is to be
presented. If you have any doubt about what constitutes authorised and unauthorised
collaboration you should consult your tutor or lecturer.
Plagiarism occurs when a student presents the work of another person as the student's own
work, or includes the ideas of others as quotations, summaries or paraphrases, without
acknowledgement s to its authorship.
Collusion occurs when a student obtains the agreement of another person for a fraudulent
purpose with the intent of obtaining an advantage in submitting an assignment or other work.
Work submitted for this assignment will be subjected to an electronic means of checking for
plagiarism and collusion via the Turnitin system. We highly recommend that you check your
work by s ubmitting it to Turnitin before you submit it for assessment.
ACADEMIC PLAGIARISM DECLARATION:
Work submitted for this assignment may be reproduced and/or communicated for the
purpose of detecting plagiarism and collusion.
The following declaration relating to academic honesty must be made at the first page of
your essay. If you are unable to make the following declaration, please contact the MMH 230
Unit Chair to discuss the issues that prevent you from doing so.
I certify that the attached work is entirely my own (or, where submitted to meet the
requirements of an approved group assignment, is the work of the group), except where
material quoted or paraphrased is acknowledged in the text. I also declare that it has not
been submitted for assessment in any other unit or course.

talk about a community organization

For this assignment, choose one local community organization that is dedicated to some social, cultural or artistic purpose that addresses at least one of the social inequalities explained in our course materials.

Reasoning and Analysis Paper Assignment
What is this paper about?
In chapter 3 of your textbook we explore the concept of the self and communication and impression management. This is the idea that we use a variety of communication strategies to influence others’ impressions of us. In Chapters 1 and 2, we discussed computer-mediated communication, including social media, which collectively describes all of the channels that make remote personal communication possible. For this paper, you must read two articles and watch one film. Then, you will now write a paper in which you use the articles, film, and either an example from pop culture or your personal experience, to discuss how identities are managed online for the specific purpose of building relationships or achieving relational goals.
Specific Steps:
WANT TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL WRITER WORK ON THIS PAPER? CLICK HERE TO ORDER THIS PAPER
 In addition to reading the following article:
o Suler, John R. “Identity Management in Cyberspace.” Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies. 4.4 (2002). p. 455-459. Web. 07 February 2013. <http://users.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/identitymanage.html>
Choose one more article from the following list of two articles:
o Amanda Todd: bullied Teen made disturbing video
o How Social Media Hurts Your Job Search
 Watch ONE of the following four films:
o Frontline: Growing Up Online (2008). Dir. Rachel Dretzin. PBS, 2008. DVD. This documentary investigates teens and their behavior on cyberspace -- available on Netflix in both disc and Watch it Now and free on pbs.org (broken down into seven chapters on PBS)
o You’ve Got Mail. Dir. Nora Ephron. Performed by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Warner Brothers, 1998. DVD.
o Easy A (2010) -- a mistaken rumor convinces the school that Olive is “easy”; rather than dispute it, she decides to embrace her new identity as the school tramp, even wearing a Scarlet “A”; however, things spiral out of control; in the end, she uses a web cam to tell the whole and true story to the school
o Catfish – a 2010 American documentary film directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman,This documentary explores the promises and perils of online relationships.
2
 Write a 3-page paper (approximately 750-1000 words) in which you: Use examples from the articles to support a thesis (opinion, idea) about how people manage their identities in social media to establish relationships. You will also use examples from the film to demonstrate main points in the articles and support your thesis. Additionally, you will use an example from pop culture (movies, TV, music, books, the latest fad, etc.) or from your own experience to also support your thesis.
If you are struggling to find a thesis, you might try focusing on one of the following question prompts to guide your paper:
 Online identity management is not always about “being yourself.” Often, it is more like a theatrical performance—one that requires different styles of self-presentation for multiple audiences. Do you agree or disagree? Take a position and develop your argument using the assigned films and/or articles.
 Reputation management has become a defining feature of online life for many internet users, especially the young. While some online users are careful to project themselves online in a way that suits specific audiences, other users embrace an open approach to sharing information about themselves and do not take steps to restrict what they share. Take a position on this topic and develop your argument using the assigned films and/or articles.
 Does gender play a significant role in how people manage their identities in social media networks? Are the stakes of losing control of one’s reputation different for women than for men? Take a position and develop your argument using the assigned films and/or articles.
 “A picture is worth a thousand words.” What factors do social media users view as most important when choosing photos to accompany their online profiles? Take a position and develop your argument using the assigned films and/or articles.
 Do you think that today’s politicians should use social media to manage their identities, or is this type of performance too risky? Take a position and develop your argument using the assigned films and/or articles.
A good paper will accomplish all of the following (although not necessarily in the order listed):
- Provide a thesis statement
- Define at least two key concepts such as identity management and social media
- Use examples from the articles to support your thesis (opinion, idea)
- Use examples from the film to support your thesis (opinion, idea)
- Use a detailed and substantial personal experience or popular culture (movies, TV, music, books, the latest fad, etc.) example to support your thesis (opinion, idea)
- Follow MLA guidelines for format and reference citation. Use appropriate language (grammar, spelling, punctuation). You must include a Works Cited page at the end of

The paper must be turned in using SafeAssign. SafeAssign will automatically check your paper for plagiarism. You must also hand in a hard copy to the instructor. Your paper will be marked using the Departmental Scoring Rubric (see on Blackboard).
Some Tips and Reminders regarding formatting your paper:
 Double-spaced
 750-1000 words (the Works Cited does not count towards the 750 words)
 Your name, the course number and section, the name of the assignment and the due date of the assignment should be at the top of the first page on the left hand side.
 Number your pages at the top right. Include your last name before the page number.
 Font must be 12 point
 Margins must be 1” all around (right, left, top, and bottom)
 Proofread your paper for citation, spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors
 You must include a Works Cited page
 Give your paper a title – center it at the top of the page
Contents/What your paper should contain
“Say what you’re going to say. Say it. Say what you said”
o In order for your paper to be understood, you need to be clear and organized in it.
o A well-thought out paper begins with an introductory paragraph that lets your reader know what you are going to talk about. It includes a thesis statement which simply tells the reader what you are going to talk about in the paper. For example, “Thesis statements strengthen authors’ messages and make it easier for readers to know the author’s perspective.”
o It is also helpful, in the introduction, to give a preview of the paper. For example, “I will demonstrate the importance of thesis statements by defining what they are, explaining their use, and showing how a lack of a thesis statement fails to prove one’s point.” This is also true for giving speeches.
o Following the introductory paragraph, the next several paragraphs of your paper will be proving your thesis statement. A good rule of thumb is one paragraph per argument or discussion point you are making.
o Your final paragraph is your closing statement. In it, you should summarize what you talked about in the paper. For example, “By defining thesis statements, explaining their use, and showing how a lack of their use creates confusion for the reader, I have demonstrated the importance of thesis statements in persuasive essays.”
o Creating an outline before you start writing your paper can help you focus both your research and your writing.
4
o The title of your paper (which goes above the introductory paragraph and below where you’ve written your name, the course number, the assignment, and date) should sum up what your paper is about. It can be catchy or straight to the point, whichever you prefer.
References and Citation
While Wikipedia is very handy and easy to access, it is not a credible resource, and must not be cited as a reference in your bibliography. It may, however, point you in the direction of credible resources. You will want to seek out those credible resources and cite them in your paper. Your paper will not appear credible with Wikipedia references in your bibliography.
o When you use another person’s words, ideas, or work in your paper, you must cite them.
o If you directly quote their work, you use quotation marks to signify this and give the page number, as well.
o In the following example, the MLA format is used: According to Dalton, “Thesis statements are the best way to make your point when writing a persuasive essay paper” (26).
o If you are simply paraphrasing or borrowing from one (or more) person’s work, you do not need quotation marks. For example: Many researchers argue that thesis statements are the foundation of a well-written paper (Miller 32, Johnson 51, and Smith 456).
o If you are referring to information that is commonly known such as that George Washington is the first president of the U.S., you do not have to cite a reference for that piece of information.
At the end of your paper, you will have a “Works Cited” page in which you list all of the references you cited in your paper.
o If you go to the OWL at Purdue (OWLpurdue.com) and look up MLA formatting, you will find citation formatting information that will guide you in creating a correct Works Cited page.
Your paper is due in Blackboard NO LATER than December 12.
