Essay 4: Nectar In A Sieve
Nectar In A Sieve by Kamala Markandaya is a heartbreaking but poignant novel about a hardworking family living in abject poverty in India. The story, told through Rukmani's perspective, examines the rural life and customs of the Indian people around the time of independence from British colonization. Write a 2 1/2-3 page (750-900 words) essay in which you answer a thought-provoking question about Nectar In A Sieve. Some thought-provoking questions about this novel could include: What is the significance of industrialism/modernism in the novel? What is the importance of religion in the novel? What role does nature take in the novel? How is the theme evident in the novel? You should not ask your question in your essay; rather, you are to address it with a meaningful interpretation of the novel.
Include the author and the title of the book in your introduction. Give enough background to place your points in context for your readers. Write a thesis sentence that addresses your question with a strong, assertive summary of your interpretation. Support your interpretation with at least two direct quotations and specific details from the work. Site the quotes with page numbers and who stated the quote. Use transitions between your ideas. Use present tense when writing about literature. Use third person point of view and an academic tone. Close your essay with an observation about the work and your interpretation. Use MLA documentation style including a Work Cited page.
The question I chose was , Through all the bad times and tough obstacles how did she keep her faith and remain strong. But you , the writer can pick what ever question you want. Thank you!
