Major Essay #3: Response Essay on Nature
Draft #1 Due: Friday, November 1
"Final" Draft Due: Friday, November 8

Write a 3-4 page thesis-driven argument that responds to one of the four essays focusing on nature we have been discussing by Emerson, Wilson, Carson, and Dillard. Make sure to use analysis to subdivide your thesis into smaller sub-points. Also, refer to at least two of our other readings to support your argument or to counterpoint your response.

Because this is a response-driven essay, you will introduce your essay with a basic summary of the essay to which you are responding, and then provide a thesis at the end of the introduction that responds to one of the issues raised in the essay. Your body paragraphs will then develop the argument you present in your thesis. Refer to the published essays throughout your essay using quotes, summary, or paraphrasing. Draw on the essays we have read to help the reader understand your position, but follow any reference to the text with your own explanation of why that reference is important to your argument. Clarify the significance of all evidence to your main claim.

Outcomes:
1)      summarize and analyze readings
2)      articulate and support a position in response to readings
3)      develop own ideas in relation to words and ideas of others
4)      incorporate words and ideas of others

Prompts:
1)      Focusing on Emerson, start by summarizing how he identifies nature as a space where mankind can become a part of the Universal Being and the perpetual youth that he thinks dwells in the wilderness. Then, answer the following question in your thesis: Do you think he is too unrealistic in his conception of nature? Why or why not?
2)      According to Edward O. Wilson, one fundamental problem that he thinks is limiting our ability to curb a global environmental catastrophe is that we are "too self absorbed" and that we must "shake off our delusions." Start by summarizing the three parts of Wilson's essay: what is limiting our thinking in the Western world, what the consequences of that thinking are, and why a "global land ethic" is needed to solve the problem. Then, answer the following question in your thesis: Do you think that what is most important regarding the approaching environmental "Armageddon," as Wilson puts it, is for us to change our ethics about the environment? Why or why not?
3)      Rachel Carson focuses on how chemical toxins are creating a significant form of contamination that are finding their ways into our bodies. Start by summarizing how she makes this argument. Then, answer the following question in your thesis: is Carson correct in her argument that the reduction of chemical toxins is an urgent necessity to the survival of our contemporary world?
4)      Choose and defend a thesis responding to another claim made in one of the essays. If you select this prompt, have your topics approved. You may e-mail me with a description of your ideas.

Requirements:
Ø  Title: The title should be interesting and reflect the content of the essay.
Ø  Introduction: Set up your thesis by giving any necessary historical information, defining your terms, and summarizing the portions of the essay to which you are responding.
Ø  Thesis: Posit a clear, concise, focused claim at the end of your introduction. Keep the scope of this essay small.
Ø  Topic Sentences: Try to have a topic sentence in each paragraph with keywords that 1) link back to thesis and 2) encapsulate the content of the paragraph.
Ø  Counterarguing: Anticipate at least one objection from your opponent and either concede or refute that position.

Ø  Conclusion. Do not repeat what you have already said, but instead answer the question “so what?” Clarify the stakes or implications of your claim.
