Linguistics
Three choices:
OPTION 1—Code-switching
1. Watch this video on Spanglish (the mixture of Spanish and English mid-sentence, sometimes even mid-word):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYMnNlfSMC0

2. Also watch this video about the little boy who speaks French, Indonesian, and English:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgWQoZz6nEk
3. (Optional: watch this other video about Spanglish. Even though the visual quality is poor, it does have a very well-respected linguist in it, who has some ideas to offer):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nq5ruHYvgg
4. Read pp. 170-172 in Language Matters, and also pp. 207 to the top of 211.
5. Write a 3- to 4-page (double-spaced) essay in which you explain why people code-switch (between any pair or set of languages that they know well) and what linguists would say about the phenomenon (hint: there are linguists in the Spanglish video, in addition to in your book). Give examples from one or more of the videos, so we can see what code-switching sounds like and how it could be structured.
During your essay, consider these questions (and answer one or more of them in your essay:
• What do the linguists and the expert users in the Spanglish video say that helps you understand how the little boy learned to keep those 3 languages separate?
• Why are some older generations so against it? Why does code-switching occur a little more among younger people? (Think about what we know about language from other parts of this course.)
• What patterns are there in code-switching (see the textbook or use your own experience and observations)? When is a switch likely to happen? What about when it happens in the middle of a sentence?
(Please don’t count it as code-switching when monolingual speakers use a word in another language, especially with other monolingual people around, in order to be funny, as in “Hey, can we get a couple more cervezas over here?” Code-switching refers to an ability that bilingual/multilingual people have.)
OPTION 2—Language and thought
Chapter 22, “Is Language a Strait-Jacket?” suggests that there are two main approaches to the relationship between language and thought:
1. linguistic relativity (or its stronger form, called linguistic determinism), which suggests that language influences the way we think (both of these are part of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis). In other words, the fact that we all speak different languages means that we perceive and divide up the world according to the language we speak. To say, “You can’t understand my language completely, because you don’t understand the cultural background,” is an example of linguistic relativity.
2. linguistic universality (the textbook authors don’t use this term language directly), which suggests that humans all share certain ways of perceiving the world and that they will have those thoughts/perceptions no matter how their different languages work. In other words, languages may be very different, but people are still capable of thinking ideas that are not encoded in their native languages.
Using specific research or ideas from at least 4 chapters and any relevant class discussions to support your points, which approach do you take? (If you’re “on the fence” between the two approaches, tell us what kinds of evidence make you think each side has some merits.)
There is no right answer to the question of which side or sides that you choose. Which one feels more persuasive to you? Use a variety of specific ideas that you learned in this course to support that side. Write a 3- to 4-page exploratory essay.

OPTION 3—What is linguistics?
This is a more complex question than it seems (in fact, there are about 12 more linguistics courses you could take at BSU, and each one would cover a different topic!).
Imagine telling your parents or a friend or someone who isn’t a linguist about what linguistics is and why it’s worth studying. Write that fictional conversation in about 4-5 pages. Remember the format, using colons and spaces after each speaker. For example:
Me: I’m taking linguistics this semester.
Cory: That sounds like it could be cool. I wish I spoke a lot of languages. So how many languages do you speak now?
Me: Oh, I didn’t take linguistics in order to learn a bunch of languages.
Cory: Really, I thought that’s what a linguist was.
Me: Actually, linguistics….
According to the syllabus, this course is about “the complex nature of language, its capacity for change, its natural diversity, and its fundamental role in our participation in social life.” But what does each of these things mean? What does it mean to say that language is complex or that it’s fundamental in society?
Requirements:
• You must quote exact words from the book 3 or 4 times, citing page numbers. Use quotes that are relevant and that support your point. Quote from at least 2 chapters (Language Matters or The 5-Minute Linguist).
• Also paraphrase the textbook, using your own words but taking the ideas from at least 4 of the chapters, citing page numbers but not using quotation marks. For example:
o Bauer, Holmes, and Warren say that grammar is like instructions for a toy or furniture assembly kit (104). This analogy is useful, I think, for….
• Use very specific examples—from class discussion, the textbook, your or other people’s wiki posts or your own observations, or some combination. Quote words and phrases and even isolated sounds.
• Pay attention to your classmates’ comments. If you like an idea and want to include it, you need to cite your classmate. You can just say, “My classmate __[name]__ points out that ________________.” Try to find out their last name so you can cite them.
• Your essay needs to be typed and needs to use standard formatting.
o capital letters at the beginnings of proper nouns
o 5 or more paragraphs, all with several lines of text and a half-inch indentation at the beginning of each paragraph
o one-inch margins
o double-spaced lines
o Remember: don’t hit “Enter” at the end of a line, only at the end of a paragraph.

o If you’re doing Option 3, then write single-spaced paragraphs for one person’s “turn” in the conversation. Then separate that person’s utterance from the next speaker’s utterance with a double space.

Art galleries have begun to conceptualize their visitors as tourists who have specific
needs and motivations and are increasingly staging special events as part of their
programs. One strategy to attract visitors is to use short-term visual art exhibits as
special events. An example is the 2012 festival of death exhibit at the Southbank
Centre in London which celebrated death by displaying unusual coffin designs from
both the UK and Ghana. In addition, a death related festival provided music
inspired by death, a play about euthanasia, talks and debates on the best ways to
die, the most eco- friendly burials and the art of obituary writing.

Instruction
c) Case Study. The purpose of case study is to develop the analytical and reasoning skill. Although idea sharing or brainstorm meetings are allowed among students at the initial stage of case study, every student is required to conduct his own case study independently. The topic of case study will be assigned in the class (Please start to read cases starting in P529 in the textbook). The steps of how to conduct a case study is more important than the content of the case study because you are expected to develop the analytic and reasoning skills.
i. The format of how to write a case analysis study is as follows:
1. Identification of Pertinent Fact,
2. Formulation of Key Issues,
3. List of Underlying Theory,
4. Analysis of the Facts with the theory on the Topic of Issue(s),
5. Reach of Conclusions,
6. Possible Strategic Implications.
ii. Please follow the above given format in conducting your case analysis. Always make sure that you are able to differentiate facts from opinions; problems from symptoms, understand the concepts, theories, and framework behind the facts and problems, render your thorough analysis, reach a sound conclusion, and see if you are able to formulate appropriate and alternative marketing solutions or strategies for a similar situation.
iii. Please limit your case analysis within two pages and use single spaced lines with double spaced between the meaningful paragraphs. Write down your name and ID number on the case study before turning it in for evaluation.
